I teach in an exciting 3rd-grade class in a rural, small town with a population of just over 1,000. My classroom is always moving and learning all the different subjects. We are super excited to learn cursive and multiplication this year as well as stepping up to chapter books in reading.
I want my students to be able to escape to many different places through books and to experience some great adventures through quality literature.
My students have different learning styles and different interests which I strive hard to provide for each student.
My students have gained a love of reading quality literature through read a-louds, small reading groups as well as large group literature studies.
Our classroom as developed a community of trust and safety which allows my students to step out and state their opinions, predictions and joy about what they are reading. I feel like we are on our way to making life long lovers of reading.
My Project
Every day students enter the room ready for an adventure! I can't physically take them to many different places, however a great quality book can take us to many places from our very own seat! I love to use Mentor Text as my lead in my lessons. This sets a great example for the children to follow with their task at hand. During our Reading time I am fortunate to have help to split the children into smaller reading groups which allows for more one on one help if needed on reading skills, and just enjoyment of reading together.
I know that if a child can get turned onto reading with a book they "Love" then they are hooked for life!
I utilize large and small reading groups which allow us to experience new adventures together through good quality literature. These books will help give my students different levels of readers, and expose them to different genres as well as different adventures to share in. Ultimately I want my students to enjoy reading and enjoy the learning we can gain from that.
