My students are in second grade and attend a Title I School. 99% of the students at our school have at least one parent serving in the military. They are constantly moving from school to school. I do my best to make sure they feel safe, loved, and welcomed. I also have a large population of students with special needs. They work hard and are excited to be at school every day.
Students who come from military families are resilient.
I make the transitions for them as easy as possible, and I welcome them and encourage them to be successful. I am amazed every day by the sacrifices these students and their parents have to make. I feel honored to teach these students. It is the least I can do to help support them.
My Project
My students will be able to understand what empathy means after listening and reading these books. The best way for students to learn and understand how to treat others properly is by learning how their actions make other people feel. Many of the students in my class have very difficult home lives. They are many times dealing with a parent being away on deployment. Teaching social and emotional behaviors in my class is extremely important.
Learning to be empathetic is an amazing trait for everyone to learn no matter what age.
These books do a great job at showing students different situations. They help kids understand the feelings of others. The students will enjoy these heartwarming stories, they'll share the emotions of many colorful characters. Each story teaches children how their actions can affect others.
My students would also love to have the superhero character kids. These cute little trophies emphasize the character traits: Cooperation, kindness, responsibility, honesty and bravery. The characters function as a visible reward for children who demonstrate positive traits. I know the students will enjoy having these characters placed on their desk when they show a positive character trait. These simple little figurines will make a world of difference in my classroom!
