Help me give my students tactile experiences to enhance their dance learning and a variety of developmentally appropriate music to make our preschool dance program better.
I teach in an urban school district in a diverse neighborhood. There are about 750 students in the school, grades kindergarten through eight. 100% of the students qualify for the free lunch program. About 15% students are special needs students. It is a diverse community of students, with over 25 languages spoken at home and about 45% of students learning English for the first time at school. Many families are first generation immigrants to the United States.
Our school has a fine and performing arts focus, with classes in visual art, dance, drama and music.
Students also have classes in library, technology, physical education, and health. This well rounded curriculum provides opportunities for all learners to feel successful in school regardless of language or disability. It is a wonderful place to teach!
The students participating in this unique project are pre-kindergarten students. Students have never experienced dance before, and my unit focuses on creative movement and expression. This is my first year teaching preK and I have absolutely no supplies or resources for this age group. The students are adorable and excited about dance and I would love to have more props and music appropriate for this age group.
My Project
The resources requested in this project will provide my youngest dancers with developmentally appropriate music and kinesthetic learning experiences. This is the first year of prekindergarten dance in our school, so we are starting with very little in terms of props or music. I have been adapting my kindergarten lessons as best I can, but I really need resources specifically designed with early childhood in mind.
Preschool dancers are full of joy for movement and need appropriate music and props in order to enhance their creative dance learning.
The resources in this project will help me increase my capacity for teaching creative dance to the youngest learners in my school. I am excited to develop my curriculum through the use of new props and music!
