My students need the little things—tongs, rubber scrapers, ice cream scoopers, cooling racks, heavy skillets, large ziplock bags, and a room fan—that make a kitchen hum.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language. You wouldn't know from their cheerful demeanors or fun-loving personalities, but many of them have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their lives.
This year, we are attempting a reboot of Home Economics after a 21-year absence—my students love it and are getting tons of practice not only with valuable living skills but also with soft skills such as collaboration and communication!
My Project
Once upon a time, our middle schoolers learned how to cook during the school day. Then the Big Bad No Child Left Behind Wolf came to town and huffed and puffed and blew Home Economics away.
For too many years, our school has had an empty, forlorn kitchen, where dust, grime, and debris ruled the day.
Slowly but surely, we are rebuilding our kitchen classroom and relaunching Home Economics. We want our kitchen to last a long time: we want bricks, not straw or sticks! We're getting close, but we're still missing a few little things like tongs, ice cream scoopers, spatulas, cooling racks, and heavy-duty skillets. When you need these items and you don't have them, it's hard to cook effectively in a one-hour class period. We need the fan because, well, sometimes despite our best efforts, we have smoke problems and need to ventilate the room to keep us all safe from the fumes. These little extras would make our kitchen a better—and more efficient—place.
Can you please help Home Economics, our favorite class, live happily ever after?
