Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language. You wouldn't know from their cheerful demeanors, but many of them have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their lives.
This year, we are attempting a reboot of Home Economics after a 21-year absence—my students love it and are getting tons of practice not only with valuable living skills but also with soft skills such as collaboration and communication!
My Project
Once upon a time, middle schoolers learned how to cook during the school day. Then the Big Bad No Child Left Behind Wolf came to town and huffed and puffed and blew Home Economics away.
For too many years, our school has had an empty, forlorn kitchen, where dust, grime, and debris ruled the day.
Slowly but surely, we are reclaiming our kitchen classroom and relaunching Home Economics, but we're still missing a few little things. We often need to store our prepped food but don't have enough containers. The GladWare variety pack, Rubbermaid storage container, and storage bags would ensure that our prepped food and leftovers are protected from spills and spoilage. We need to print our recipes, but we're out of printer ink. We need tissues when our noses get runny, but we don't have any right now. We could really use more cleaning supplies, such as sponges, dish brushes, and bleach packs to keep our kitchen sparkling clean. Last but not least, every kitchen should have a well-stocked first aid kit. We have one, but it has only one bandage size and no burn gel or antibiotic ointment. These little extras would make our kitchen a safer place.
Can you please help Home Economics, our favorite class, live happily ever after?
