Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am yet to meet the next crop of bright, vivacious learners to walk through the doors of our overwhelmingly large middle school, but there are a few facts that hold true about the students I will be welcoming into a new learning environment in less than a week. I know from experience that these sixth graders will be met with the challenges of adjusting to a new school, making new friends, and trying to navigate and process multiple sets of standards and routines as they move from class to class.
Our students come from all over the world and from various walks of life, each with a unique and often emotional backstory.
Many struggle with disabilities and language barriers, making not only learning but expression rather difficult. As their ELA teacher, I am certain of how critical it is for our students to have access to resources that will allow them to maximize their success with subject-specific material outside of the ELA classroom.
My Project
This book would serve as a one-stop resource shop for our students who often struggle to navigate the concepts taught in sixth grade English while overcoming language barriers. Many students benefit from additional practice in areas such as short story elements and grammar rules that must be continually addressed throughout the school year. This book will provide our students with a resource that will be utilized as a reference, supplementary material, and practice.
Many of our students are faced with the daunting task of completing homework assignments without the ability to ask for help.
This versatile and compact text will be used by our students at home to address this challenge while also being used collaboratively within the learning environment.
