My class of 24 energetic students come from many cultures and speak many different languages. While some of our student live in homes that the families are purchasing, the majority of our students are in income assisted housing or other rentals. Many qualify for free and reduced lunch.
These circumstances do not affect their eagerness to learn or their drive to succeed.
Some are very bright and require advanced work to engage their minds, while others struggle to master skills taught in Kindergarten.
Currently my students gather around a tape recorder and try and listen to a book on tape. While they are doing this other students are reading out loud, doing an art project, or a writing assignment. Others are working in small groups.
The class room is busy and there is a hum of activity, making it hard to focus on the story.
By having the listening center students will be able to hear and focus better. After listening students will be invited to create art and writing projects. They will return to the story to listen again to remember details, enjoy the story, or find information to finish an assignment.
