This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students at GHA come from all different walks of life. Many of these children never leave the city of Flint until they are adults. As educators, we realize the importance of bringing experiences into our school to allow our students to experience things they may not ever get the chance to. One of these experiences is the opportunity to perform in a Broadway type musical. Our students will probably never have the chance to watch a Broadway musical, let alone perform in one.
When the opportunity came around last year to be able to perform a Disney Musical, we jumped on it.
This experience changed our arts program. Students who never wanted to sing or dance, now love music and dancing. Many of the students joined band this year because of their love for musical arts.
Disney Musicals in Schools is an incredible program that has allowed under-priveleged students in Flint, MI and all around the country to experience the arts in an incredibly hands-on, real way.
This year we plan to perform The Lion King, KIDS in the spring and cannot wait to get started!
My Project
We need costumes to make our characters look more realistic! We will use the items to create Broadway types costumes for the students who have main roles. The students will be able to jump into their roles as African characters and really portray the character with ease and finesse. These costumes will allow our students to feel comfortable on stage without too much 'bulk' on them to make it difficult for dancing and singing.
