Our inclusive kindergarten class is not just a place where diversity is represented but a place where everyone belongs no matter their language, ability, culture, or race. Inclusion is belonging.
Our class contains students in general education and students in special education growing and learning together.
We are a high poverty school where students need an opportunity to see education as a marvelous experience that maximizes each person's unique gifts and abilities.
Relationships are key to growing in life. We live and learn in community. Together we are building a positive and supportive early education community who lead, support, challenge and encourage each other.
My Project
Legos and the Lego learning laboratory (the mobile storage unit) will give our kindergarten inventors a way to authentically experience the design process described in the NGSS science standards: define the problem, develop a solution, and optimize solutions. Currently we have enough Legos to satisfy the building needs of 4 engineers. However, many more children are always waiting to play Legos. The small amount of Legos also means that projects do not stay intact from one time to the next. Every time their Lego turn is up, their invention is dismantled hence the need for a Lego laboratory.
We will use the mobile storage unit as our Lego learning laboratory — keeping our not-yet-completed Lego designs safe while we continue through the design process and test our Lego inventions.
In addition to all the science and math skills that Lego creating develops, our kindergarteners will be developing essential communication, collaboration, problem solving, presentation, and fine motor skills.
Legos create a highly motivating fully inclusive way to learn in which all subjects can be authentically integrated for a truly exceptional learning experience.
