There's no other feeling than finding that book and that fictional world that you just CONNECT with! My students are learning in an urban school district. 90% of them receive free or reduced lunch. The majority of students coming to me this year are significantly below grade level in reading. My job is not only to close this gap but to help them find that world that they want to escape to. Whether it be the wizarding world, a parallel universe, or a coral castle under the sea, I want my students to cling to their books and beg for the next one in the series.
My Project
I can't even imagine being told in the second half of the fourth grade that I was going to have to stay at home and not go to school.
My students were used to coming in every day, getting their morning hug, listening to me read to them, and then going off to read independently in a comfy corner of the classroom.
But now? Now we are at home, facing the struggles of distance learning. My students who have technology are able to access digital books, but what about those students who weren't able to pick up Chromebooks? What about the students who have to share Chromebooks with a sibling, or two, or three, and can't always get online?
By supplying me with these books, I will be able to put together a book package to drop off on my students' doorsteps, so that we can keep the learning going, even without access to technology. Besides, who doesn't love the feeling of a REAL book?
