This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This is my eleventh year as a teacher, and I have always taught at Title I schools. This year I am looking forward to another tenacious, loving, committed crew of fifth graders. I love that my kids embrace my classroom, and I love how we become a team. They have grit, heart, and are full of curiosity. Through science experiments, history simulations, math groups, writer's workshop, and shared reading experiences and book clubs, my students embrace the learning process and overcome self-doubt.
My kids come from diverse backgrounds with varying challenges, but they are unstoppable.
My students are very much 21st century learners and love lounging around the classroom while they complete their work. The best part of my day is the first ten minutes when we catch up with each other, talk about our lessons, and generally laugh about life. My students are a blessing!
My Project
The past two years have proven to me that students respond best in an environment that is comfortable and invites collaboration and choice. Round tables and flexible seating options help me to achieve that goal. By providing engaging reading materials that capture their interest, I am able to gradually diminish my teacher presence as the room becomes student-centered.
My goal is always to create a classroom environment that inspires students to be limitless and self-motivated.
Through science experiments, historical simulations, math groups with real world application, book clubs, and high interest novels, my students are consistently engaged. These materials will go a long way in providing my students the choice and flexibility that nurture their academic, social, and emotional growth.
