Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I asked my students from the 5 periods that I teach to attend a "Taste & Teach" after school program. This program allows students to learn about a different produce each month, and also, of course, to taste it. We would like to start a small garden.
The students who attend this class are really interested and are curious about plants, fruits and vegetable in particular.
A few of them didn't know that fruits were once flowers. They are all very eager to see how fruits and vegetable started out as a seed and become a mature edible product.
They are all very eager to get started on this garden, which was so evident when we assembled 3 garden boxes and also when they wrote "request for funding" letters to businesses around the school. While we're waiting for some kind of funding we are still continuing the Taste & Teach portion of this after school program.
My Project
The materials I'm requesting will fulfill the beginnings of a learning garden. Once we get the tools and supplies, we can get started on planting seeds to grow into seedlings, ready for planting in about 2 months, after a few lessons on "plants".
We will be meeting once a week and I hope to recruit more students to join once they see that a real garden is beginning to form.
Here are some lessons students will learn: parts and functions of a plant (including how fruits are formed...); types of plants; when and how to plant fruits and vegetables...
By donating to this project, students will become more aware of where their "food" is coming from and hopefully realize that they can grow their own and start eating healthy and nutritious meals.
