Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever listened to a story and felt as though you were right there in the book with the characters? My students need to surround themselves with voice, expression, and repetition; this way they can develop a sense of what they should sound like as they are beginning their journey as a reader.
My students are a diverse group of children whose families come from many different countries such as Burma, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic.
I have 25 students in my classroom. They are sweet, energetic, and hard-working. They love everything about learning whether it is listening to stories, writing, making patterns, or observing things around them. They have been working hard to master the letters and sounds of the alphabet, as well as other phonological awareness skills, and building their sight word foundation all year long. Many of them are beginning to delve into the task of becoming independent and fluent readers. Our school is one of eleven different elementary schools within our district. My students are part of about a 330 student population. They all receive free lunch and breakfast. They come from families who love them and want them to be successful in their educational endeavors.
My Project
My students need excellent literature on CDs and individual CD players to develop their fluency by listening to appropriate grade level fluent reading. My students love hearing stories and they love being read to. They are also excited about becoming readers themselves, the individual listening centers will help them to take part in both of these activities. The stories are familiar books that children love to hear again and again. They could listen to the whimsical story of the five silly monkeys jumping on the bed every day and still smile when they hear it and even join in with the chorus of "No more monkeys jumping on the bed!" These resources will help to surround them with excellent literature, fluent voices, and help them to develop important print awareness skills. The individual CD players will allow the children to work at their own pace. All of these benefits will help them to build their confidence as a reader. These items are something that I can continue to add to over the years.
Research has shown that if children are fluent readers, they will exhibit better comprehension and be more likely to be on their appropriate academic level as they grow older.
One way to develop a child's fluency is through providing them with a model of what a fluent reader sounds like. These resources will provide these things for my students. I believe that incorporating this into their daily days will help make my students become successful, fluent, independent readers by the end of the year
