My students need 8 new headphones for the listening center and computers, plus 3 new centers to help learn their ABCs, rhyming, beginning and ending sounds, and math skills.
My most of my Kindergartners come into class never seeing a book, how to hold a pencil or knowing what a letter or a number is. These centers will open a whole new world to my students that they will take with them forever as they begin their academic journey.
I teach in a multicultural classroom that is filled with 25 wonderful and unique Kindergarteners who are eager to learn how to read, write and learn their numbers.
I have been teaching Kindergarten nine years in a diverse school whose students are Hispanics (38%), Caucasian (7%), Asian (31%) and African American (24%). Over 35% of our students have limited English. I would like to provide enough centers in my room so each child can build their confidence in their ability to learn their letters, sounds, sight words, numbers and apply it to their every day lives. Kindergarten is the beginning of a students long journey in education, by having the appropriate materials available and ready, it would make their journey exciting and fun.
My Project
Students arrive at kindergarten with a varied background in education. Many have little or no experience in a classroom setting or exposure to English as a language. In my classroom alone, 12 of my students speak another language, usually 4-5 of these students speak a limited amount of English. The variety of centers at each child's level will allow me to provide many opportunities to facilitate skills in oral language, comprehension, reading and writing. Many of my students still need the basic skills of what is a letter and what is a sound, how to sound out a word, what is a word, what is a sentence. These simple skills are important because as adults we use it everyday in our lives. It is the foundation of what students will be learning from. No one can learn to read or write until these skills are mastered.
As our school district budgets are shrinking,it is hard to provide my students with appropriate materials that will allow them to reach their maximum potential.
With these materials, not only will it improve their language, phonics and math skills, it will also improve their confidence in their abilities. This is a gift that will keep on giving, my students will have a strong foundation to continue their education successfully, but will be used with future classes.
