Three words that describe first graders: eager, joyful, and curious. These words describe the energy that walks into our classroom every day! My first graders are eager to learn, joyful in their relationships with each other and curious about their world.
Our students come from different continents, speak different languages, have different cultural experiences and family dynamics, but when we are together, we are one big family of excited, caring learners!
We start and end our day with "circle time" where we develop our social skills, friendships and respect. In this way, we prepare for our learning time together and we end our day by reflecting on our learning, our relationships, and transitioning for our time at home.
Our school is a new magnet STEM school and this emphasis is perfect for enthusiastic 6 and 7 year old students who are naturally inquisitive, engaged and excited by the "magic" of science, technology, math, and engineering. They love to spread their wings, test their boundaries and soar!
First graders bring their whole authentic selves to the classroom and that is why we think that first grade is the the best!
When kids are in charge of their learning, the teacher just moves out of their way and watches them soar! These items will help students build independence and motivation in a variety of ways. The karaoke microphone will give them their voice as readers and presenters of ideas. The presenter clicker will let them take turns setting the pace for learning and reading with the class. The visual timer will help them to learn time management skills which is a skill that will be important throughout their lives. The table top lights will allow teams to work together to prepare for learning and indicate when they are ready so we can get lessons started!
First graders will be their own learning leaders!
Let's give them the tools to develop the skills they need to be independent learners!
