Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in New Haven, CT. The majority of the students served by this program are recent immigrants from all over the globe. Some have fled life in prostitution, gang violence, and war. Most need to heal from trauma.

I teach them musicianship.

I empower them to take control of their lives and tell their story through music. I have watched boys who have spent five years in refugee camps begin their first steps in "rocking out" on electric guitar. I have seen a boy whose brother had just been killed by gang violence in Puerto Rico smile as he taught our principal to play some chords. I seek to work the same restorative healing through a string orchestra program and larger rock course using more than just guitars.

My Project

The recording studio is being switched from PC to Mac but we don't have enough computers for the enrolled students. I am attempting to run boot camp on the PC laptops that we have but am afraid the qwerty keyboards are going to confuse them when learning their keyboard shortcuts.

Students must learn their Apple keyboard shortcuts.

Mac computers are what these future producers will use in most professional studios they encounter because they are the most compatible with audio hardware. We might not have real Macs but we can use bootcamp and these special keyboards to keep the learning moving ahead!
