Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of teaching two groups of classes (in Spanish) of 25 students in an urban public K-8 school. My students are mainly of Hispanic backgrounds and come to school everyday with the eagerness and willingness to learn. Being able to find relatable Spanish material for my students (of whom I teach all day in their native language of Spanish) would be extremely beneficial.
One part of the day they look forward to the most is our Literacy Block.
Our students love reading and expanding their imaginations with both fiction and nonfiction works. However it is tough to see 8/9 year olds huddled together on the floor of our room on a thin rug, either laying on each other reading or sitting against the walls trying to enjoy their book for the 40 minutes.
Unfortunately with a public school budget we don’t have enough money for extra amenities in the classroom. My students would be extremely grateful to have a comfortable space for reading and more tools to expand their literacy.
My Project
These materials will help my students enjoy reading even more because they will get to be in a safe and comfortable setting. That’s what the Yoga Balance and Therapy Dome is for. Choice seating always helps them be comfortable and enjoy what they are doing more. The Magnetic Write & Wipe boards will be used in small group instruction and in centers so that all my students can practice phonological awareness hands on. This will help them be able to manipulate with letters on the white board.
Also, will provide my advanced students a wider variety of Spanish books at their level.
They love Judy Moody books and this will keep my students at a higher level excited about reading. These tools will provide to all of my students with the right tools to keep growing in their first language (Spanish) and develop their second language.
