Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 6th-8th graders learning about music and singing. Some of them have me for Music class, where they are learning the basics of music and how to create some of their own music. The other students have me for Choir and are learning the basics of music, singing, and how to write their own song. The Choir students even have an opportunity to perform the song they wrote at the last concert of the year.
My students are creative and find Choir and Music as a place to express themselves.
Middle school students are going through a lot of transitions and my students love my class because they find a place where they are accepted and loved. They appreciate the safe place to take chances and find their voice (literally and figuratively).
My Project
Our current sound board (powered mixer) is on it's last leg. Only a few channels work anymore and when I talked to the administration and financial secretary about getting a new one, they said that things were too tight right now. At that point, I knew I was going to have to find outside funding to replace this.
This project will give students a chance to develop and showcase their talents.
Not only will this give our choirs a new sound board but it will provide more channels for microphones, allowing for more voices to be heard and a better sound. Students who write their own songs and showcase them at the final concert will continue to be able to do that with reliable sound equipment. Other students will be able to showcase their talent of setting up and running the sound equipment.
I am always trying to show my students that there are so many other jobs in the music field other than just the main singer. Most of them get focused on stardom but fail to realize that the chances of that happening are like the chances of getting into professional sports. I try not to tell them it is impossible but show them there are so many other avenues to pursue their passion for music, many of these making more money than the main singer. Teaching students, especially those that love hands-on, tech experiences, how to run and set up sound equipment prepares them for one of those fields. In conclusion, this sound board (powered mixer) gives my students a chance to continue their development and passion for music.
