My Students

Literature (and all art) can have a political, economic, and cultural affect. This is such a text!

My students are artists/scholars who love to engage in political and cultural issues.

I use a Socratic process whereby ideas are exchanged in a civil and respectful manner. I seek texts that encourage discussion of contemporary issues. The role of government in our lives is a very salient topic.

My Project

My students love our political discussions and they ultimately focus on the role of government in our lives. Upton Sinclair's novel "The Jungle" will give us an historical perspective from which to discuss the need, the cost, and the limits of government oversight.

This is one of those books that stopped me in my tracks.

Many of my ideas about the role of government oversight were put into perspective as a result of this text. My students will soon be voting citizens and I want them to clearly consider the role and limits of government in their lives.
