The Joy of Reading

Help me give my students the joy of reading! I want to make sure I have leveled books and a reading corner.

My Students

On the surface, my class is just like any other. My students are hard-working, spunky, and respond well to positivity. They start every morning by reading quietly and enjoying their breakfast. They earn class rewards at specials. They play games at recess. They work hard. They love when I make a mistake. And they never forget about class store. But they come from very difficult backgrounds, which makes simple things like these mean even more.

Every year my students continue to impress me.

They come from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. It is hard emotionally to be focused so much on their education, only to learn about issues going on at home. Our community is very transient and a lot of our students struggle with homelessness. This affects every aspect of their lives, including food reliability, warm clothes, unstable family structures, and poor attendance. They are resilient, and they prove it every day.

My Project

I want my classroom to be a sanctuary for reading. Where reading is always seen as a reward and privilege. I have requested a wide range of novels so students can read independently, but at their level. I requested comfy floor seating so students can relax and so reading time is special to them. I remember my own moments as a student, finding a quiet corner and escaping into my imagination. I want all students to be able to have that in my classroom, especially if they don't have that opportunity at home.
