My students need a classroom library from which they will have access to literature that interests them and introduces them to the JOY OF READING! These include the Hunger Games trilogy, Percy Jackson, and the The Twilight Saga White Collection.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students will succeed. They will need a little help. As it stands, the students of our school are faced with, not only the well-known difficulties of growing up in the inner city, but also other challenges that are simply beyond their control and impact their learning experiences.
My students are level 3 and 4 English Language Learners, which means that literacy is absolutely crucial to their success in the coming years.
With less than 20% of our school's students reading at a proficient level, the odds don't seem to be in their favor. It is up to us to help these students beat those odds! Our district is currently negotiating public library closures due to budget cuts, as well as shorter hours and fewer librarians. This will limit our students' access to interesting reading material free of cost. This only adds to the fact that many students are already unable to attend these public libraries given that their parents work long hours and struggle to make ends meet. I want to make sure that my students have free access to book that they will want to devour! They need to know that reading is one of life's greatest joys. After all, they will only reach proficiency if they READ! They will only read if they have access to books they LOVE!
My Project
The materials I am requesting include a wide variety of fictions books that are known to interest students in the grade levels I will be teaching (6-8). When my students can't put down a Percy Jackson book and can't wait to pick up the next in the series, they will be fully engaged in the joy of learning and reading. They will see the deep impact that getting caught up in a thrilling story, page after page, chapter after chapter, can have in their lives. And when those test scores come in, they will see that this thing, READING, that they have come to love so much, has made them grow as learners and individuals. Unfortunately, our school is strapped for funds, and our students currently have access to outdated reading material in precarious conditions. These materials will have a deep impact in our students' lives and will promote THE JOY OF LEARNING despite any factors beyond their control.
My students need to become life-long readers if they are going to be successful beyond my class, beyond middle school, long past high school, and into college and careers.
They need to develop and love for reading and learning, and these materials will go a long way in getting them there! We need you!
