Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth grade teacher at P.S. 8, an under-resourced public school in Washington Heights. I currently teach in a reduced class size setting, primarily working with "at-risk" students, including ESL students, and students with IEPs. Reading is especially difficult for my students, because most entered my classroom reading well below grade level. My goal this year has been to help these students improve their reading skills and gain a joy for reading.
As the year has progressed, I have used many techniques to help students improve. However, I still have not been able to reach all of my students, and have realized that they need more than I currently have to give in my classroom.
These students, who lack basic phonemic awareness and reading fluency, would benefit greatly from a listening center, where they can follow along with books while listening to a fluent reader read the text. This will enable them to learn how to pronounce words more accurately and allow them the opportunity to enjoy books and gain meaning and understanding of the books, because they will not constantly have to stop to sound out words.
While I do have headphones and tape players, I do not have the books or audio cassette recordings needed to maintain a successful listening center. Therefore, I am asking for an Audiobook Library from Scholastic.com, which comes with books and audio recordings. The program, called Read 180, uses high interest books to engage readers. I believe these books and recordings will greatly encourage my struggling readers and hopefully help them to develop a love for reading.
Though the listening center will target my struggling readers, all of my students will be impacted by its presence, and will use the center to support their personal needs. Therefore, all 15 of my students will be able to improve their reading with the aid of this center.
Reading is an amazing experience for each child, but this year, I have seen the light drain out of my students faces when they struggle and become frustrated. These listening center materials will give my students a huge boost and bring the joy and light of reading back into their hearts.
