Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.
This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects and activities that include history, science, literacy, and art!
My Project
In the fall students participated in hands-on workshops about bees and learned how bees are essential and endangered.
This spring students would like to work on bee projects in the school garden.
In addition to setting up a small hive, students will research life cycle of bees, positive environment for bees and safety around bees using the library books. They will also make sure bee friendly plants are growing in the garden.
Students will get some honey from the farmers market at City Hall and then use the honey in cooking. (While they are in the kitchen they will create some magnetic poetry about bees, too!)
