I am a kindergarten teacher in a rural South Carolina school near Clemson University. I teach 21 wonderful five and six-year olds this year. Fifty-two percent of my students are on free or reduced lunch. As a teacher, one of my goals is to share quality literature with my class. In doing so, I hope to bring out the budding reader and writer in each one of my students. I also strive to build a strong connection between home and school. I want my students to develop a love of reading and writing that goes beyond the school building. In addition, I want my K-5 families to see the impact of their interest and involvement in their child's education.
This year, I would like to add a new component to my classroom that will help me reach these goals. I want to send literacy bags home with my students. Since I have 21 students, I would like to rotate two different bags at a time. That way, nobody has to wait 21 long days to take home a literacy bag. Each bag will contain a book, an activity card, a related puppet or manipulatives, a journal for recording responses, and supplies for writing and drawing. Depending on when I am able to start this project, I will need 15-20 literacy bags. I am asking for half of the books needed in this proposal in order to make my request more feasible.
I believe that the integration of literacy bags in my kindergarten class excite my students and parents about reading and writing together. I have chosen to use literacy bags that can be purchased from Childcraft because they contain quality literature, and they provide activities that will promote parent-child interaction, discussion of various topics, and written responses to the literature through journaling. The students will have an opportunity to share their journal entries in my class Author's Chair when they return their literacy bag. The entries for each literature selection will be compiled into a class book as well. After each child has taken home both books in a rotation, I will begin with new topics and books for each bag so we can continue the excitement through the year.
I envision this project as being a springboard for families to enjoy books and share quality time together at home. Through this project, I want to provide students and their families with an opportunity to read and communicate in the home. By exposing my students and their families to a variety of topics through quality literature, I hope to foster an appreciation for reading and writing. I want my children to be so excited about the literacy bags that their families will be compelled to create other literacy opportunities in the home. I hope that this project will be the beginning of a lifetime of reading and writing for my students and their families. Thank you in advance for believing in this literacy project and for helping to make it a possibility for my wonderful kindergarteners.
