I teach eager Advanced 7th grade English students in Michigan. My students will learn about World War II and the Holocaust all school year. We will read many books that are very detailed but cannot do justice to what these events deserve. The students will be able to speak to a survivor to get the knowledge to wrap up what they've been studying.
I want my students to remember everything they've learned this year, and I strongly feel the Memorial Center will make that happen.
My 7th graders are excited to learn and have been asking about this educational trip since the first day of school. They have made me a better teacher because they are so curious and thirsty for knowledge. What better way to give them this knowledge, than to allow them to see artifacts from the actual Holocaust? My students know the importance of learning about this event as well as the maturity it takes to comprehend it. When I've asked my previous students what they will remember most about my class, the majority of them said the Holocaust Memorial Center trip.
My Project
Many of these teens have never been out of Kalamazoo, and providing them this opportunity will change their lives forever.
Your donation will help make this trip possible for my students.
Please help solidify the life lessons we've covered all year by giving them an experience they'll never forget. Students will get to meet a survivor and speak to them about their experiences. One section of the tour involves a piece about being a bystander. There is a discussion about how to never let something like the Holocaust happen again. My students are always geared up and motivated after this part to go out and change the world and their school.
Students will be choosing one person from the Memorial Center to pay specific attention to and take notes on. When they return to school, they will continue to research that person on the Internet. After gathering enough knowledge, the students will then engage in a poetry unit that will focus on honoring that person. These poems will be provided to those who request a thank you package from my students after funding is complete.
