This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school system is dedicated to teaching a portion of the 8th-grade history curriculum about the Holocaust. With this in mind, it is the hope that we can dedicate a portion of the media center, by creating a section that would be one of the primary setups for this unit.

It would be a wonderful opportunity to have the students be able to peruse books, both fiction and non-fiction, that reach all aspects of the Holocaust.

The book selection for this unit would be reflected in both the 8th-grade curriculum and the summer reading list. We are hoping to have multiple copies of books so that students would be able to read a specific title and discuss it within a book club/cluster setting.

My students come from a varied background that has its challenges both economically and personally. The school is in a low poverty area with more than half the students from low-income households. The student population in part come from primarily Spanish-speaking households. Therefore, as some of the households' first language is Spanish, we are looking for a wide range of reading levels.

My Project

This project will hopefully take on a life of its own. Encouraging the students to research, picture and understand this part of history and how the world came together for one moment to help put an end to a tragedy that affected so many. Whether students work individually or in groups they will be able to use these books to make a bigger impact on their project. When a student finishes this unit it will be with a more knowledgeable understanding of the Holocaust. Hopefully, this section of the media center will expand every year with more books, materials, and databases that address this topic.
