Despite various barriers, my students are open-minded inquirers that want and deserve an excellent education. I teach at a Title 1 school, where more than 75% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. I am a special education teacher, and I reach a reading and writing course. My students are eager to learn, and truly want to become strong readers and writers, but we do not always have the money for additional resources.
My students are what keep me going every day.
My Project
I want my students to have the opportunity to learn what it can be like to pick up a book and go on an adventure with it. I want them to see that reading can be fun and exciting! I will also use clips from the movies to have students compare and contrast the novel to the films.
Students will focus on characterization, figurative language, and narrative elements in The Hobbit, while reading an enjoyable adventure narrative.
They will get to have creative assignments where they will draw the characters the way they are described in the book and write about how Tolkien develops them as characters.
