My students need 30 copies of "The Hobbit" to read in Writing Club, 4 other books to complete in class, a Writing Lesson book for class and 2 sharpeners for 50 kids.
This package is intended to foster excitement in reading in writing in order to achieve proficiency on reading and writing skills by the end of the year. With the average student reading below grade level, this package will pinpoint areas necessary to bring my students to grade level and beyond.
My students are 51 sixth graders at St Francis Indian School Elementary on the Rosebud Reservation.
I teach all English and Social Studies, and our reading and writing skills are very low. I have a detailed plan to work diligently with my students to help them read and write on a proficient level. This package provides the components necessary to make this plan into a reality in our classroom.
My Project
'The Hobbit' is designed for an after-school writing club. This club fosters excitement toward writing, particularly creative writing. It also demands that students read peer work and evaluate the writing. Furthermore, we discuss how we must be great readers to be great writers. This is why we will read 'The Hobbit' together in class. 'The Lightning Thief,' 'Warriors Don't Cry,' 'Freak the Mighty,' and 'The Giver' will complete class sets for the entire year. With class sets, students will be able to follow along in their own book. As a result, students will be able to follow along, word-by-word, during read-aloud. Also, this will also allow for students to read the text independently and foster self-sufficiency. This is the only way that students will be able to increase fluency and actually achieve proficiency on reading skills. The writing lesson book will enable our Writing lessons to be even stronger.
The pencil sharpeners will accommodate all 51 children and their pencil needs.
This package is incredibly important because it will supply the resources necessary for our students to reach a level of reading and writing proficiency necessary to be on grade level.
If we do not reach proficiency, we will go into another year behind in reading and writing. This would only continue the achievement gap and set our students further behind and make College success a distant goal.
