My Students
We have great kids at our school who put forth a great effort to be successful in school. My students come from a rural community where poverty can be high. Our free or reduced price lunch rate is typically over fifty percent of the student population.
My students have a very diverse taste in reading interests and it is so important to be able to put high interest books of various genres and reading levels in their hands. We work in a workshop model and students are always happy to be given a choice in what they read.
My Project
I have selected eighteen, high interest novels about many diverse issues. I also have requested tem copies of "The Hate U Give" and "All-American Boys" to use in Book Club formats.
I hope that the issues raised in these books will be the start of empathetic conversations. We don't live in an area with a lot of diversity so I would like these books to shed some light on the subject matter.
I'm team teaching this class with a social studies teacher so I'm excited to see what connections and viewpoints my students create when they are studying Sociology in his class.
