Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My student body consists of approximately 150 students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The racial makeup of my students is 95% African-American. A majority of my students come from homes where parents do not have a college education.

It is the objective of the school to ensure that the students are on the path to being college and career ready by the time they leave middle school.

However, this is quite difficult because many of the students are reading two to three grade levels below the national average. In order to create greater opportunities for success, we strive to create challenging and engaging lessons which students find exciting.

My Project

My school is infusing technology and art into the curriculum. We have completed multiple projects that are theme-based and art-based. For example, during Hispanic Heritage month, we did self-portraits to honor Frida Khalo. During Native American Heritage Month, we did art projects to honor famous native Americans. We recently completed projects honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Needless to say, our art supplies go very quickly. We really need to refurnish our supplies of markers and colored pencils.

The markers and colored pencils purchased by this project will be used to continue our practice of making the curriculum more fun through art.

The adhesive poster putty will be used to display our art projects on the walls and around the school so all can see.
