This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Learning to work and play together is an important part of second grade. Having a classroom carpet is an important part of that process, and we are in need of one!
Our school is located in the heart of Milwaukee's inner city.
97% of my students receive free or reduced rate lunch. This indicates that they are living at or below the poverty line. Consequently school becomes an essential place for them to feel safe, learn, eat, receive health care and be part of a growing community. As second graders they are active and curious. Our room is a constant buzz! We love to sing, create and learn. Most of our learning is done out of our desks in whole group on the carpet or spread out in centers around the room.
My Project
My Project: I am requesting a large whole class area rug for our classroom; one that is brightly colored with individual squares for each child. This rug is the heart of our class. We meet here every morning and afternoon. We sing, perform, learn and play on this rug. Currently we are working with an old worn out gray rug I purchased when I began teaching. It would be wonderful to have the centerpiece of our room be something that brings life to the room and is inviting for the children. In addition having individual squares for children to have their own space is essential in second grade as developmentally this age is when a sense of individuality emerges.
Having this rug is an important part of our classroom.
It is a way to start every morning in a positive space. Students will feel that they are in a place where they matter and their learning is important. Please help us reach our goal!
