My Students
My students attend a charter school that serves a low income, minority community full of adults and children that understand the value of an education. My students are hard workers and have surprised me multiple times by going above and beyond to meet their goals. They have made vast improvements in reading, writing, math and science due to determination and grit. That being said, some scholars require a little extra love and time to help them attain the goals they have.
My Project
My reading group is made of scholars in quintiles 1 and 2. This means they read below grade level. Although these scholars have expressed to me their desire to increase their reading level, they do not enjoy reading. Recently, I downloaded the first three chapters of The Hate U Give. My usually squirrelly scholars were 100 percent engaged, and we were able to have important discussions at the end of each days reading. I believe this is an important book for my reading group because it’s not only a book they actually asked to read, but it gives me the opportunity to have discussions surrounding social justice and race.
