My students are rural students. There are a lot of farms and factories in our community. We are about half an hour from the metro and we do not have a single bookstore in town. It is hard for students to find books they are interested in. We partner with Keene Memorial Library in town.
My students need to be introduced to worlds outside of their town.
I want my students to be well rounded and educated individuals so they know to strive for great things, and to reach for the stars.
I want the students to find different books to read. I want students to read books that look like their life. I want the students to relate to the material that they are reading.
My Project
I am the Project Lit Chapter Leader for our school. This will open students' eyes to diverse books, teach them about diversity, create a compassionate learning environment.
I chose The Hate U Give for our project, because not only is it a popular and diverse book choice, but it is in the process of being created into a movie.
We plan to fundraise for movie tickets, transportation to the movie theater since many of my students do not have or own cars, and hardcover books so the students can share them with others.
I want students to be out in public representing their school. I would like to show the community that the students that attend FHS are students who are to be given a chance instead of being a stereotype.
Flex Space Comfy Floor Seat: The book club area is a cramped area with not enough chairs, or seating in general, to fit the number of students we have participating. Some of them scrunch next to each other, some share seats, some have to sit on the floor.
The Hate U Give: We are planning on reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I think my students need to be exposed to more diversity, as well as current events. I would like to read the book, discuss it with a community night, and have an open talk with parents, teachers, book club members and staff members.
Snacks: Snacks are always an incentive for community nights. When the book club members are reading, I always try to provide some sort of snack. Who doesn't like snacks while they are reading?!?!
