Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with the mild to moderate special education population, second through fifth grade, which includes a variety of eligibilities such as autism, other health impairment, ADHD, and specific learning disability. I have the pleasure of working with my students from one to four years. They are some of the hardest working students that you will ever meet. They display a genuine desire to learn and never give up, even when they face adversity.

My students welcome new challenges and view them as an opportunity to move closer to their social and academic goals.

During my time working with them, I have seen them grow academically, work collaboratively, overcome personal obstacles, and become both class and school leaders. With proper instruction, support, and adequate access to the curriculum, they have become mathematicians, readers, authors, athletes, scientists, historians, and artists.

There is nothing more fulfilling than observing one of my students recognize their own growth, have an "Aha!" moment, and recognize that hard work pays off. This is extremely rewarding when working with students with disabilities because when they internalize and recognize their own abilities, they radiate with self-confidence.

My Project

Flexible seating gives students choices and provides a more comfortable and productive learning environment for all students. Empowering students with the ability to make choices teaches them responsibility, motivates them, and maximizes their learning potential. I have observed my students make appropriate and responsible choices, while increasing productivity. Seating may change throughout the day, from the carpet, to a wobble stool, or even a yoga ball.

No two students are alike, and the cookie cutter classroom does not work best for all students.

The products that I have chosen will provide my students with additional seating options. The carpet will provide students with a clean space to sit on, or lay down on while working independently or with a partner. The floor cushions will give students something comfortable to sit on while working at the low table. The yoga ball and the kick bands will provide fidgety students the opportunity to get the wiggles out. While the Flex-Space comfy floor seat will provide additional floor seating.

I am amazed at the immediate positive impact that flexible seating has had in my classroom. The classroom has become a true learning community. Students are more engaged, less disruptive, and they have taken ownership of their own learning.
