Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you're reading this, someone probably taught you how to read. In schools with students of lower socioeconomic status, learning and engaging in reading can be a difficult task. From lack of resources to overwhelming outside obligations, literacy wanes and students can become disinterested in reading altogether.
The power of reading can change the direction of a student's life; a high level of literacy can influence and help to break the cycle of poverty.
My students will be reading a novel about the consequences of power and the hope of freedom. Your help in providing The Handmaid's Tale will help students to expand their imagination, improve and enhance literacy, and analyze their own role in a world of changing power structures. Thank you for considering sending my students this incredible gift. For your own sake, never forget - the power of reading can truly change your life.
My Project
Students will be deep-diving into a book study on The Handmaid's Tale. We will specifically be looking at themes of power, freedom, struggle, and gender and sex in society. Throughout the unit, students will consider the obligations of morality, the consequences of our actions, and the struggle between choosing what is best for self and others.
The functions of language, power, and identity will be a central focus of this unit.
Students will work in small groups, literature circles, and write essays. If my request is fulfilled, each student will be able to have their own copy of the novel, work on assignments in class and at home, and take responsibility for their learning.
