We are a special day Autism class in Richmond, California. We like to garden and cook as well as do art with nature based items. We spend two days out of the week cooking and gardening, and other days we are learning how to spell, write and take care of ourselves.
We like to get to know how we can better treat the earth and our bodies with growing good healthy food. Gardening and cooking is also a good vocation for these students' futures! Learning these skills lets us thrive by helping us take care of ourselves and others.
My Project
SES is an under-served low income school. The students here are eager to participate in art and gardening programs that facilitate exploration in nature, personal self-expression and therapeutic interactions with growing and caring for plants. The Growing Garden Project is lead by the school's onsite occupational therapist who works with both the special education and general education population to promote fine, gross and visual-motor development.
The Growing Garden Project is envisioned to assist in the overall social, emotional, physical and academic development of the students within our school.
With use of the garden children can design garden bed spaces, plant edibles, flowers and herbs, cook with edibles provided, create natural art projects such as garden bouquets, nature mobiles, and plant collages as well as build practical skills, enhance self esteem and personal expression. The possibilities are limitless. With the onsite occupational therapist (OT) spearheading the project, the longevity and implementation of the project can reach all students in the school rather than just one classroom.
We need a hose, hose roller, compost bin, worm castings, seeds, a hand tiller, vegetable trellises and a sprinkler set.
