"It's being here now that's important. There's no past and there's no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can't relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don't know if there is one." - George Harrison
About 350 students are 6th graders who are learning about the history of the world.
Roosevelt Middle is a community and magnet school, which receives Title 1 funding. A large percent of the student enrollment comes from the immediate community which consists of primarily low income and socioeconomically-challenged minorities, including: Latinos, African Americans, Caribbean, Caucasian, Pacific Islander, Asian, and Indian. The Magnet Program obtains students from outside the immediate community, and from all over Palm Beach County. The Magnet Program provides students with the CORE subjects in addition to more specialized courses, such as: science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and pre-med. Roosevelt employs highly qualified and effective administrators, teachers, and staff who provide students with well rounded education and extra-curricular activities.
Approximately 110 students will be given the opportunity to reconstruct the Great Wall of China, made from play doh perched upon a foam boarder. Plastic cutlery will be used to build up this rampart, including the towers and forts. The students will learn that the construction of the wall was no easy feat. They will learn that it took millions of bricks, stones, and thousands of men to build. They will get information of the Wall's reconstruction in modern times, and learn about the many myths and legends surrounding the it. They will learn some amazing details and facts about the Great Wall of China, such as: the Warring States Period (600-221 B.C.) during which these massive barriers were built to protect the Chinese from waves of invaders.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom by enabling the students to reconstruct the Great Wall of China, which took millions of bricks and stones to build.
It's been said that if the Great Wall of China had been built at a height of five feet, it would circle the globe. Students are fascinated that this huge wall was built by many different empires. Each wall built by a student will be connected, and students can relate to the different empires that participated.
