Help me give my students hands-on, play-based materials and books to help them connect to our school wide theme of Ancient China. We're going to learn about the animals of the Chinese Zodiac!
Our classroom is filled with inquisitive energy and laughter. There is a wonderful balance of high academic standards, mixed with dancing, community building and of course the most important thing in kindergarten: PLAY.
My students are kind to one another and, because of the diverse nature of their peers' needs, they support each other eagerly and thoughtfully.
We function as a family-- a home away from homes that are sometimes filled with trauma, uncertainty, and loss. We do not allow put-downs in our class community, thereby creating a safe and sacred learning environment that supports risk-taking, perseverance and kicking in your best effort in everything you do. My young scholars approach learning tasks with a great deal of gusto and they do not take anything for granted. There is no time for boredom in our classroom; we keep the learning moving! Our curricula is filled with age-appropriate studies of physics & balance, sculptors, ecology, awareness of cultures and issues of social justice. Our school was founded by parent and community grassroots activists who dreamed of better opportunities for children of color.
My Project
Our school has three school-wide themes each year and the theme for winter is Ancient China. Naturally, we want to consider ways to make this theme connect to three-year-olds in an engaging and culturally relevant way, while delivering appropriate content about a country most of our students have never visited.
We will be teaching our students about the stories of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.
There are some wonderful books we've selected about "The Great Race" and we're excited about using maps and materials to ignite their imagination! We will also be using puppets, dramatic play and other hands-on activities that will engage them and teach them about Chinese culture.
