My students need books and gardening supplies to help them learn about how plants grow, while allowing them to have a hands on experience in the growing process.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Growing up I spent most of my childhood playing and exploring outdoors. Today's children are missing out on these experiences. I want my students to know the excitement of digging in the ground, and watching something grow that they helped to create.
My students are in a Title 1, low income school.
More than 80% of them receive Free or Reduced lunch. They come from many places and some live a very transient life. They have never had the opportunity to plant a garden and learn that fruits and vegetables don't start at the supermarket. Most of my students arrive early at school, and stay late at after-care because there are no parents at home to take them earlier. They never have the chance to explore the outdoors, to dig in the soil, to plant seeds and see what they can grow. I want to provide them with this opportunity which will give them a better understanding of the world around them. It will also give them a chance to appreciate being outdoors, and not sitting in front of a computer screen.
My Project
I am requesting some books that will explore the growing process of plants, as well as some tools to assist in starting our class garden. I intend to incorporate science as well as math skills in planning the garden. Students will have a hands on experience from the beginning. We will use the books to gain an over-view on what we will be observing. We will measure out the area to garden in. The lessons will allow the kids to study the soil, the insects that will help our garden, the growing stages of the seeds, and it will also teach them responsibility. They will be responsible for maintaining the garden using natural rainwater resources, weeding, and harvesting.
Without these supplies, my students will be very limited as far as having a hands on learning experience.
We have very little funding for projects that extend beyond our regular curriculum. My students are so grateful for anything that opens up new doors to them. They are very excited to start this project and would appreciate any assistance we can get to help get our garden growing tall!
