My school is "stuck in the middle." Being a moderate poverty school, we do not receive the funding and resources provided to poorer schools, yet we do not have the parent donor base of affluent schools.
As a magnet school, we serve students from throughout the district, encompassing a wide range of home languages, academic proficiency, and socioeconomic levels.
We are also a full-inclusion school, so I teach all students including those with special needs, the gifted, and English Language Learners. I teach a rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) curriculum constructed on a foundation of hands-on learning and real-world application.
My Project
Students will be able to use the Breakout boxes to actively engage in various science lessons. Breakout EDU challenges combine teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, and course content.
In my classroom, students will be engaged in combining science content with teamwork as they collaborate to solve various problems.
A Breakout chemistry challenge will combine paper and pencil problems with digital ones about chemical formulas, reactions, atomic structure, and the periodic table. Teams will solve problems in order to figure out lock combinations, obtain ultraviolet lights to read secret messages, and eventually open locked boxes to "break out" and reach their goal!
I am requesting two Breakout EDU boxes, as well as supplies to make additional ones and add variety to the locks my colleagues will have. For this, I am requesting locking utility boxes and various padlocks. The science tattoos will be fun prizes. The cardstock, laminating pouches, playing cards, and UV markers are needed to produce lab task cards and clue cards for challenge activities. All teachers creating escape challenges will be able to use the Flip camera to produce videos of digital clues and procedures for the hands-on lab activities, as well as photos to use on clue cards. The activities will have students using the universal indicator, filter paper, forceps, string, measurement cups and syringes, balloons, and red gel filters, along with supplies the school already has.
I look forward to examining the Breakout EDU online resources and working with colleagues to create content-based escape challenges for students to complete in science classes. These games will provide opportunities for our students to build valuable skills in applying knowledge, effective collaboration, listening, and perseverance, while having fun!
