Help me give my students an opportunity to experience life differently. They can escape to the other side of the world, explore Hogwarts, cry through the pages, or fall in love with a vampire by opening a book.
My students are wizards and engineers. They believe in fairies and time travel. They imagine crazy animals and tell silly stories. My students are thirsty for books of adventure, science, and life experience. They are curious about love, cultures, and history. I have a noisy bunch of 6th grade rascals who love to play, create, and learn.
They hope that their ideas will resonate beyond the walls of our classroom and run and create like nothing could get in their way, yet silently slink into pages as I read books out loud.
Home may be tough, family may be shattered, and previous schools may have pushed them down, but in my class we are committed to being playful and silly and learning bunches along the way.
My Project
My students are thirsty for reading and have been flying through my classroom collection. They deserve the opportunity to read about the Holocaust through the eyes of Eli Wiesel or to quest with Percy Jackson through Greek mythology.
My students would eat up the drawings in American Born Chinese and laugh out loud with Junior in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian.
They deserve the chance to see the world through other people's eyes and ask big questions about big ideas that they get the chance to read about in these books.
These materials will give students more opportunity to experience culture, perspective, and identity by opening up new worlds through their pages.
