Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This urban area, on the south side of Oklahoma City, has suffered from a high poverty rate. These students come from the worst part of town, and with that they deal with crime, abuse, and few options. Some 90% or more of my students qualify for free and reduced price lunch. Many work part-time (or even full-time) jobs after school to help support their families.
These students come to our school looking for a safe place, and for a good education.
We are a public charter school, and we accept anyone and everyone if there is room to grow. With students who are gang members, to National Merit Scholars, this school is a place to come and learn. This community is built to last, and continue growing, as alumni come back to teach the next group of students.
My Project
At the beginning of the year, I thought I would give Donorschoose.org a try, and I asked for 50 books in a two part project. I found these books in the lessons that are available on Readworks.org, each teaching a different skill in reading. I have taught lessons in Author's Purpose, Cause and Effect, Character, Classify and Categorize, Compare and Contrast, Drawing Conclusions, Explicit Information, Fact and Opinion, Figurative Language, Genre, Main Idea, Plot, Point of View, Predicting, Pronoun Reference, Sequence, Setting, Theme, Vocabulary in Context, and Voice. I love having a classroom that is built on a community of reading.
These books have been a bridge in understanding for my students.
So, naturally, I would like to continue with these lessons that succeed. I want more than anything to fill up my empty shelves with books that can reach my students while I teach. The books that I have asked for in this project are all relating to the lessons of Cause and Effect, with reading levels in grades 1-4. Using books from my student's reading levels help them to aspire to greater reading goals.
