Cutting and gluing are some of the most important skills a kindergarten student can learn . In my class room we design projects with construction paper and glue for just about every subject. Cutting and gluing build excellent fine motor skills and good spacial awareness for all students.
My students are typical urban kindergarten students. They come from a variety of economic and ethnic back rounds.
The majority of our students are underprivileged as well as being second language learners. Our classrooms also serve a number of special needs students each year. Our school is a community school dedicated to giving the students an exceptional learning experience from K to fifth grade. When they come to us in the fall each student enthusiastically joins us bringing his or her strengths and skill levels.
My Project
The team of teachers that I work with in Kindergarten find that initially cutting and gluing help our students build fine motor skills. We create projects using paper and glue that enhance a student's understanding in many curriculum areas. Most notably science, language arts, and art. These projects help our students build critical thinking skills and creative initiative. For example when we study bears our students construct a pictorial depiction of a bear and its habitat as a summative activity after the lesson and discussion about bears has taken place . This sort of activity supports the kindergarten science standard that students will learn the main parts of an animal's body. So gluing on four legs will help a student remember that a bear has four legs and not two. It also promotes creativity and success which are key components to the learning process.
The reason I am asking for this grant is that even during good economic times we always run out of glue in the second half of the year, We are faced with an extremely tight budget this coming year and I am concerned that we will not be able to do as many of these types of projects .
This would be disappointing to both students and teachers.
I want to add that by purchasing glue pumps and gallons of glue allow us to use the same small glue pots all year long, there for creating much less waste.
