My Students

Our school is an inner-city school with a diverse population. We have over 850 children walking through our hallways, speaking a variety of languages and coming from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Each day these students enter a safe learning environment and are greeted with smiles from dedicated, caring staff members.

I love to teach, and I want my students to love learning.

Language arts encompasses reading, writing, and speaking, and I try to engage students by using the arts to enhance their learning. This is a challenge with a district that is underfunded. I appreciate the opportunity to help me help my students. Thank you!

My Project

Shel Silverstein's, The Giving Tree, is the perfect mentor text to use in the classroom. Using this classic story, students will learn how to write a narrative essay as well an argument essay based on this book. In so doing, students will learn the structures of the different writing styles.

A class set of The Giving Tree will help my students as they learn to write argument and narrative essays.

The simplistic story is ideal to teach the writing processes. It will serve as a springboard for students to use these writing styles independently in the first semester of language arts class as we learn about individuals helping their communities as well as human connections.
