My Students

With today's focus on nonfiction text, many students are not being exposed to the wonderful world of literature. I want to cultivate a environment of voracious readers. Finding books that are appealing, interesting, and age appropriate to a 6th grader can be challenging.

My students are 6th graders in a gifted cluster environment.

Our school is located in an outlying suburb that is quite diverse. We have horse and farming families, some of our students speak Spanish at home, our school is also within the boundary of the local Air Force base. Like all students, they want to be challenged, to be creative, to be inspired to achieve more.

My Project

Due to the emphasis on technology and nonfiction texts, many of the students have not learned the joy of reading classic novels. The students will use The Giver throughout the first quarter as a mentor text for narrative writing. Students will be able to see development of characters, the setting, and how the plot is built. The students will use this book as a book club to create academic conversation, debate, and as a comprehension tool.

Donations of The Giver will make a difference in my classroom.

It is hard to come by a class set of novels at the level of students. When each student has their own copy to read it helps them to feel important. Knowing they can take it home for the evenings and share what they read with their families helps to build literacy and the love of reading for the entire community.
