Every night, my students are told to read for a specific amount of time. Most nights, they struggle to choose reading material that interests them. But many have ASKED for a specific book that I don't have. That's where donors choose comes in.
My students go to school in an inner city neighborhood school.
Most of my students have refused to read because in their homes, literacy is not a priority. They lose interest easily unless the book peaks their interest. When many of my students come from imperfect lives, we talk about what a "perfect world" would be like. Last year, students brought up the idea of reading this book and more jumped on board!
My Project
I am requesting 40 copies of The Giver. With these books, I will be able to help my students learn to love reading. I am certain that these books will help them read at a higher level, think critically, and think about lives other than their own. This will be one more tool that can help prepare them to become more educated so they have more options in their future.
Donations for this project will allow my students to learn about other genres of literature in a way that is actually fun and exciting to think about.
When any one of the students gets excited about a specific book I feel like going out and buying the 40 copies myself for them all to take home, but that isn't realistic. Our school library doesn't have the ability to fulfill this need, which is why I am asking for help on behalf of my students.
