"Take a Stand Against Bullying" is an important issue in our society, and many students struggle with conflict resolution and peer relationships. Teaching students how to identify bullying and resolve conflict peacefully will help students build stronger social skills and create a safer school environment.
At our school, 95.8 percent of our students are considered economically disadvantaged.
Our student population speaks a total of 19 different languages. We have a very diverse population and equally diverse needs of students due to cultural issues. Social, emotional, and cultural respect and responsibility are important issues. We are an inner-city school in a high poverty and crime district. Exposing the students to more cultures and mainstream values will improve their potential to value education and become a productive citizen in our society. We recognize that our biggest challenge is our high number of Limited English Proficiency students. Students begin at a grade-level appropriate to age, but with limited skills and educational experiences, often they have no prior education before coming to the US.
My students need a variety of materials, like people and emotions learning cards, an empathy doll, and an emotion book set, to build social emotional skills. Being a well-rounded person is an important quality in our society. It is important that all individuals maintain some of their own cultural values, but also they must adapt to the mainstream culture and values in order to be accepted. An example of this is, in some cultures it is taught that you should not make eye contact with adults, however in Western Culture it is important to make eye contact and considered disrespectful if you don't. I feel that exposure to a variety of cultural values will increase our students respect of other cultures, and recognize that it is important to value the cultural values of others. This can be best taught through values, social emotional skills, and conflict resolution. The resources will be used to support the classroom guidance lessons of cultural values by students. Our school is unique in the different cultures and ethnicity's that make up our student body. I would love to see the students maintain their own culture and adapt to mainstream society.
The issues that we see everyday in the media concerning school violence and the victims of this violence.
It is important that students be taught tolerance and respect of others and an early age. It is expected that they may have difficulties adapting and adjusting to social norms. Learning how to identify socially unacceptable behaviors, and learning to respect others will give these student skills that will last for a life time.
