This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our middle school is a Title 1 school with over 80% of its students having free or reduced lunch. I am the AVID elective teacher at NMS. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID students tend to be from socioeconomically disadvantaged families and will be the first in their families to attend college. AVID aims at bringing the student who is in the academic middle, placing them in rigorous, college-preparatory classes, and teaching them the skills they will need to be successful in college and in their future careers.

My Project

It is one of the most recognizable smells in the world… the buttery smell of fresh popped popcorn. It is a smell that is connected to friends, family, and togetherness… This is something that our sweet families at NMS truly need . You may have noticed Sheldon ISD making national headlines these last few weeks with the amount of flooding that our community has faced. Not only have many of our campuses flooded, but a majority our students’ homes were engulfed as well. In this time of need, we would like to not only give our students the ability to have something positive to focus on, but also their families. The projector cart would house a projector so that we can host Family Movie Night for our community in this difficult time. We have 1040 students and their families who will be directly impacted by this project. Being able to have Family Movie Nights would also open up the possibility for our AVID students to work those nights and receive community service hours and allow them to work on their communication skills. The Popcorn Machine set up would not only allow us to provide popcorn to our families during our movie nights, but also during sporting events, field days, curriculum nights, and/or any other special event we host. The PA system would ensure great sound quality at our Movie Nights, but also would be able to be utilized during school dances, pep rallies, etc. This would be a complete game-changer for our campus. This is a time where we need to mend our community and refocus on our bond. It is important for our families to know that we will always be here for them.
