My students are a fun group of creative and active fifth graders. We live in a rural, isolated village in northwest Alaska, where many students practice subsistence hunting and fishing to support their families. Most of my students are Native Alaskan and are taught traditional native values.
My students love playing sports, hunting caribou, riding snow machines and four-wheelers, going ice fishing, and sledding.
My students are a diverse group, with strong ties to their families, their culture, and the land. In the classroom, they are an energetic group that enjoys working in groups, doing hands-on activities, and playing goofy games.
My Project
We live in Northwest Alaska, and the winters here can get down to 30 degrees below zero. We go outside for recess until it's 20 below. Some of my students come to school and forget to bring warm gear for recess, or the coats they have aren't very warm. I hate seeing them shivering, but right now I don't have anything to offer them. These coats will ensure that all of my students can have a warm coat, hats, and gloves to borrow when they need them.
With these warm clothes, my students don't have to worry about being too cold to play at recess.
I will always have a warm coat to offer any student that needs one.
