My students are awesome! They have been through a lot of change this year and had multiple substitutes until I was hired in November. On top of all of this, we live in a small rural community where the poverty levels are high. We are a Title 1 school and 80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Despite all of the difficulties that they have been through at the young ages of 5 and 6, they are still determined and excited to learn every day. We are a close-knit class, and we are going to work past any obstacles that try to get in our way of preparing them for the first grade!
My Project
I am determined to encourage my students to WANT to read and know that it is not just something that they HAVE to do. Reading should be fun and engaging, which is why I want to have some of these literacy games in my classroom.
There's no better gift than learning how to read, and there's no better way to teach reading than through games.
The average attention span of a 5-year-old is roughly 15 minutes. I want the students to be fully engaged during those 15 minutes and what better way to do so than to play a FUN literacy game! These games, like alphabet bingo and word puzzles, will be used during flex groups, free time, and for students who finish their work early. The goal of the games will be to help improve print concept skills, sight word fluency, phonemic awareness, and phonological awareness.
